Collecting VAT for all EU countries

Posted on: 11th Mar 2010 By: Robert Kent 7 Comments

When you are retailing in the UK and selling your wears abroad – if you are a registered V.A.T company you can charge the V.A.T that is taken from your goods to any country in the EU.

There’s a really easy way to do this – basically use Magento’s inbuilt tax system.

If you click on manage tax zones & rates you can add countries to your list. For each country just select the country name from the drop down and add the percentage of tax you’d want to charge. (in this case 17.5%).

Where you have added your complete list of countries you then navigate to the Manage Tax Rules page.

Here you can enable your tax rates and by using the multiple select tool you can select all your new countries.

Now when you check your tax rates for other countries they come up in the quote calculator!

Thank you for posting this, I didn’t know Magento had this feature until now :)

    Hi,
And you call this as a feature, and you’re explaining something interesting?

Man this is horrible, the drop-down it’s once, not multi-selecting, so it’s mean that you have to add 25 tax rules to 25 EVAT Countries, and if in my case, selling to all over the world, I have to add a tax free rule, and then add the 200 countries, or I don’t know how much in all over the world in different and separated rules, because the drop down it’s not a multi-select…

And you call this as feature, it need a life to do it… and you consider this what you explain here as a tutorial?

    Hi,

Ok this is the same for me but probably quite easy to fill in using the Import/Export function. However the Countries export using a 2 letter code. Are these the Country Codes ie GB and where can I get a full list of the correct country codes for re-importing?

    Thanks

    Hi,

described solution doesn’t really solve the more complex problem with VAT in EU. If you need to charge VAT across and outside of EU states, try this extension:
