Common Ecommerce Mistakes

Posted on: 30th Apr 2010 By: Robert Kent 1 Comment

When browsing the web and visiting e-commerce store and shops I have been astounded at the number of flaws that some of these websites classify as “features”. When designing an ecommerce shop it is important to have only one thing in mind – usability. There’s no point building a bridge if no-one can cross it – same applies to an ecommerce shop. This is why we use Magento, the usability is effectively built in. Of course there are ways that we can improve even the usability of magento but at least it does the important things correctly – aspects such as:

  • one-page checkout
  • floating basket/wishlist
  • tabbed information (modern theme)

All of these features are important, very important – as important as anything else that appears on the site. I have seen too many good ecommerce stores let down by bad usability design – even some magento ones! (This is because they hacked magento up like a roast parsnip).

In the coming week I will be reviewing a book entitled Magent 1.3: Sales Tactics Cookbook. It is this book which has piqued my interest in the usability of Magento sites – it is vital that when a visitor comes to your store – they turn into a customer.

This is really just something to think about before I give you all a brief overview of the book and go into more detail on some of the topics mentioned within. Trust me, they are worth knowing about.

Thanks for visiting our magento blog at ecommerce website design!
